interlock mount

purpose

An adapter is required to secure the interlock beak onto glass doors.

constraints & requirements
  • Cosmetics: The design must be aesthetically pleasing and minimal as it will be installed on very expensive elevators. More specifically, the glass will let it be seen from both sides

  • Glass Cutting: For a specific wall thickness of 0.75", glass cutting has various constriaints

    • minimum hole diameter of 0.75"

    • minimum distance from hole edge to glass edge of 1.125"

    • relief cuts of 1/16" wide if distance to wall is <1.125"

    • holes less than 1.125" apart require relief cuts

  • Clamping Force: The beak weighs 50g, requiring a clamping force of 5N to endure life cycle

design

The design required custom glass cutting with relief features to accomodate the mechanism. The components were fabricated from stamped sheet metal with threaded PEM inserts installed during forming to secure fasteners in place. The component is then painted for cosmetics, and fastneers were then used to securely clamp and retain the assembly in place. The design was successfuly tested through 10 000 cycles, demonstrating reliable clamping force.
